Top Ten Anime OP

Well, I finally got around to it. This has been a long time coming, I hope youtube doesn’t take down any of the videos that I put up. As I am writing this, I am listening to the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni OP, which is on the list, but where (mystery….suspense).

First I’d like to point out that an OP is more than just the song, it’s the visual effects, animation, premise….blah…..blah……….blahhhhhh.

10. Maria + Holic – Hanaji by  Yu Kobayashi

Although this is a new show, I loved the OP as soon as it came out (and the show too). There’s a lot of OP by the same production studio, Shaft, that are awesome. They always have a good way of mixing music and artistic, smart, cool animation. Frankly, I like the ED better. (I don’t have enough endings to make a top ten….only 2…..this is number 2 on that list)

EDIT: They took the previous video down, skip 14 seconds in that’s where the OP starts. Why take down an OP for copyright reasons? It’s not like it reveals anything. Gay.

9. Bleach – Rolling Star by Yui

Coincidentally, this song reminded me of a song I can use for my top ten endings list (take a wild wild guess). As for Rolling Star by Yui, the song is very good. I like to hear it. However, the animation sequence is nothing special, so it’s stuck at the bottom of this countdown.

8. Ergo Proxy -Kiri by MONORAL

I loved this show. I thought it kicked ass. I mean, look at the OP. I love the grittiness and choppiness it has. It matches the song perfectly, and does a good job of reflecting the anime, which is kind of dark. One of the best OP Eye have seen.

7. To LOVE-Ru – Forever We Can Make It -Thyme

Why did I like this OP so much? Well first of all the song is awesome. I really liked the song. Secondly, I thought it was a cool idea to have the credits written on an article of clothing, or a tag hanging from a bag, and it zooms in to show that. Most shows have the credits scrolling, which is boring. Also, the drawing is sketchy kind of, yet detailed, and that’s cool. (that was the shittiest explanation of the art work you could have). I also watched the video to the actual song…the girl who sings this is hot….she doesn’t really look asian though.

6. Lucky Star – Motteke! Sailor Fuku! by 4 Main Voice Actors of Show

Yes. BOOYAH! This OP is awesome! You can make fun of me all you want for liking this song, but the song, coupled with the cool scenes throughout this opening slots this in at number 6. I wanted to put it higher, but there’s so many good openings. I think Lucky Star was one of the few shows where I actually watched the OP every time without fail.

5. Pani Poni Dash! – Yellow Vacation, Roulette Roulette,  by The Voice Actors of the Show

Yellow Vacation

Roulette Roulette

Yes I know these are two different openings, but If I treated two openings  to two slots in this top ten,  I’d have two shows taking up a majority of slots. Therefore, since I liked both of these openings close to the same, I let them share a spot. Of the two, Roulette Roulette is my favorite one. This show is another one by Shaft, and as usual their OPs are artistic and different, and the songs are awesome too. I wanna re-watch this show. It reminds me of summer (both because of the music and the fact that I watched this during summer a while ago).

4. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei – All Twisted Up Inside, Daytime Rumba by Kenji Ohtsuki and Voice Actors From the Show

All Twisted Up Inside

Daytime Rumba

Shaft is back at work making more awesome openings. As usual, these are artistic different. All I can say is that the songs are awesome, the animation is awesome, and the show is awesome (barely missed my top ten).

3. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni – Higurashi no Naku Koro ni by Eiko Shimamiya

Not only does this opening match the anime with precision, but it’s really just a fuckin awesome song. I actually played this in my spare time more than any other anime OP (except Lucky Star). The animation is awesome, flowers, then blood. Awesome.

2. Cowboy Bebop – Tank! by The Seatbelts

Finally, an OP that isn’t J-Pop, or J-Rock or something like that. It’s jazzzzzzz. And the animation shows that. The lines, the colors, the shadows. I actually watched this OP every time I watched Bebop. In a way, the opening reminded me of Spike, because both were……well….I guess you could call them smooth.

NUMBER 1

Samurai Champloo – Battlcry by The Kid

I watched this show around the same time a Pani Poni Dash! So it reminds me of summer. This anime didn’t only have a sick intro, but its soundtrack was riddled with hip hop. Let’s take a second and see why this anime will never be taken down from my top ten (most likely). Three things I love most in this world are hip hop, anime, and feudal Japan. This anime has all those things. It’s like they studied me, and made an anime for me. Fuck, there’s even an episode about baseball (one of the funniest/best anime episodes ever made). They make fun of Commodore Perry so bad it’s awesome. I don’t need to explain this OP though, it speaks for itself.

What do you think? Anything I miss? Anything you think is better? Anyone read this? Be merry, you just read something that Eye wrote.

EDIT: I guess I thow in some honorable mentions:

(The ones in BOLD were ones that should/could have been in the top ten)

  • Naruto – Fighting Dreamers OP
  • Inuyasha – Grip! OP
  • xxxHOLiC – Whatever the name of the song is OP
  • Elfen Lied – Liliad? OP (I don’t remember the name of the song, and since this is just honorable mentions thrown in I don’t feel like looking the names up. I thought this was a pretty good OP, and one cannot say it was not well made. Probably perfect for the show, and really cool animation. Is it bold though? hmmm).
  • Mahou Sensei Negima! – Happy Material (Electric and Regular Versions) OP
  • Love Hina/Love Hina Again – OPs
  • Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (I keep bringing this show up…time to do a review on it I guess)
  • Excel Saga – OP
  • Ah! My Goddess – OP Bagpipes suck
  • Negima!? – OP (another Bang-shaft….get what I’m trying to say?)
  • Kemeko Deluxe! – OP
  • Shaman King – OP
  • Gintama – 1st OP (just picked this show up finished downloading the first 90 episodes torrent style. Liked the OP)

There that’s all the OP’s I like really. I think there was one from Ranma 1/2 that I liked, but I can’t remember which one (there’s a bunch) so whatever.

New Drops, Additions

I had watched the first season of Clannad,

and it was pretty good. It wasn’t bad anyway. Thusly, I decided to watch the second season, but by episode 6, I suddenly didn’t have it in me to continue. I figured I’d pick it up after it moved along a bit, no big deal. Well today I decided to continue the series, but I got about a minute into the episode when I realized that i really can’t get into this anime. Therefore, I will drop Clannad: After Story. I will do a final review (through 6 episodes, which doesn’t really mean anything).

Pros:

  • Good animation.
  • A bit of humor.

Cons:

  • To slow paced/boring for me. I mean, I need some action or something. My incredibly short attention span and hyperactive lifestyle create the need for SOMETHING TO HAPPEN!
  • The characters are normal people. I think this is the main point that drove this anime off the cliff which is my list of anime. I mean, no one had any weird or special quality that made then unique. Examples: In Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, there was a girl who was highly optimistic, a girl that like collecting tails (of animals) and was covered in bandages because the animals would hit her, a girl who was a stalker, a girl that was a perfectionist, a girl who was an immigrant, a girl who stayed in school, but didn’t go to class, you get the picture, I mean, in this show the one normal girl was unique because she was normal. The point is, characters need something that creates interest between him/her and the audience which is me. A lot of people like Clannad (After Story) and that’s fine, I’m not knocking the show. It’s just not for me.

I think I gave the first series a 4 or 5, this one has to get a 3 since a dropped it, but if I never stopped watching it would probably get a 4.

That being said, I am pleased to announce new additions. I’ll list them:

  • xxxHOLiC Kei
  • Potemayo
  • Hyakko
  • Maria + Holic

I don’t know how this concerns anyone though. I just figured, that while I’m announcing what shows I’m dropping I might as well say what I’m starting. Pff, no one reads this site anyway.

Mai HiME and Mai Otome = series review

This series, along with Shakugan no Shana, are to series that I feel define anime. In other words, when I think of anime, I think of these two series.

Mai HiME

Premise: Basically, the anime of Mai HiME revolves around a girl named Mai, who recently transfers to Fuka Academy along with her brother, Takumi. Soon thereafter (I love saying that), she learns about HiMEs (Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment), of which there are several, including herself, at the school. HiME’s (if you don’t understand the definition I just gave you) have the ability to summon childs, or these monster things that fight for them, by turning photons into real object. Of course, that doesn’t really give you a full description of the show. I mean, the show leads you in one direction and then halfway through drops a huge ass BAM right on your face. This show has just about everything that you can stuff into an anime.

Pros:

  • The animation is done very well, especially the fight scenes and scenes with technology. Awesome.
  • It has fighting, dynamic characters, romance, BAM moments, one of the best plots I’ve seen, etc.
  • The ability to make it seem as though i haven’t watched many episodes from the time I sat down, when really I’ve been watching the show for 6 hours. (If that’s confusing to you, I’ll put it this way: You can watch the whole show in one sitting easy).
  • It forced me to want more so badly that I read the manga (I don’t really read that much manga comparative to a normal anime buff…actually, I don’t even watch a lot of anime comparative to an anime buff).
  • It alienated me from people for a day (people suck, and for the most part, they are stupid….yes I realize I am a person too….I am stupid).
  • The title is an innuendo: Mai HiME  as in Mai (maiin character) is a HiME, and Mai HiME as in My HiME.

Cons:

  • Only one: The end was too much about love…sappy, corny, but eye enjoyed it anyway because it was a huge fight scene.

Awesome, awesome, awesome get a

FINAL GRADE = 5^^ (Number 7 position on my top ten…yes I rearranged them again)

Mai Otome

Premise: This show was the spin off to Mai HiME, not a sequel, actually, it has almost nothing to do with Mai HiME. It takes place in a different world and has a different plot, with a few similarities. For example, it has almost the entirely same cast as in My HiME, but they all play roles completely different (for the most part) then in Mai HiME. Their personalities can be different as well. There are new characters however, as this story revolves around a girl named Arika, and her quest to become an Otome. An Otome is a virgin that has nanomachines injected into their bodies, which can allow them to achieve superhuman abilities, such as flight and strength, when they are kissed by their master (person who  they are appointed to protect) specifically one their GEM (Generable Enigmatic Matrix), which is one of a set of stones. One stone is given to the master, the other to the Otome. Otome play a big role in the military as well, as the country with the most Otome usually has the strongest army. Otomoe are forbidden from sex with guys because men have a gene that make it impossible for nano machines to work, and if an Otome fucks with a guy, she’ll develop antibodies that make it impossible for nano machines to work. I still haven’t really mentioned a plot…..let’s see. Arika is looking for her mother, or info on her mother, and then decides to become an Otome. A shitload of awesome shit happens.

Pros:

  • Pretty much all of the pros from Mai HiME apply here, except I never read the manga.
  • It didn’t have anything about love in the end.
  • You were able to watch the same characters play different roles, which was really cool. It’s strange how you can make a person seem older in anime just by saying that their older. Also, this anime had some things that appear in Mai HiME, for example, the bar is the same. Moments where things like this occurred were almost like mini-BAMs cuz I was like, “Oh that’s the same as in the first one!” Then I would look around and realize I was talking to myself.
  • A lot more technical. Or I should say, there was a lot more technology. Which was awesome.
  • The plot might actually be better than in Mai HiME.
  • The OVA was SICK (Mai Otome Zwei)

Cons:

  • [insert a “con” if you can find one]

Wooooo haaaa I got you all in

FINAL GRADE = 5^^ (no spot on top ten….I don’t know why)

The reason I wrote this is because I started watching Mai Otome S.ifr, and it’s sick. A sequel was announced about a year ago, but Eye haven’t heard anything about it lately.

EDIT: Apparently Mai Otome is on the same planet and stuff as My HiME, just really really far in the future……didn’t know that.
