Tsukuyomi MOON PHASE: Great Example of SHAFT

So I just finished said anime a little while ago, and toward the end, I realized:

“Hey, this is filled with examples of awesome Shaft/Akiyuki Shinbo awesomeness.”

Therefore,  decided, that I will combine my review of said series with a review of Shaft/Akiyuki Shinbo awesomeness. First, the latter:

What is it about Shaft/Akiyuki Shinbo productions that revs my engine? Well, let me first say that I love all of the randomness that come with each episode. Example?

random microphone

Here we have a perfectly normal scene, except there is a boom left in the camera even though it obviously isn’t needed, since it’s a fucking animation. Basically, what I am trying to say, is that the randomness is off the charts awesome. As far as Tsukuyomi: MOON PHASE goes, I LOVED the pans, which would strike people’s heads ten times per episode:

Take this serious moment in the anime. Kouheii is falling from a FUCKING CLIFF. He could die, and then a pan randomly hits him in the head. Awesome.

Oh shit, he's falling off a cliff

Oh shit, he's falling off a cliff and now he got hit with a pan too

To reiterate: Awesome. Basically, the whole random falling of pans and kettles (sometimes it wasn’t random, but for the most part, it was) was just a great addition to this anime. Even in serious moments, a pan could fall and create immense humor (for me). Honestly, the Pans were great. That’s all I’m going to talk about regarding SHAFT, although I’m sure I’m missing more. Feel free to chime in with anything else. Or don’t. I don’t really care either way (he said bitterly).

So what about the show in general? I liked it. At first, I thought that it would be a cutesy wootsy anime that would suck, but it turned out to not be that at all as much as I originally anticipated. I mean, sure, there was the neko mimi mode and all of that bullshit. But I thought it was funny most of the time (because honestly it was pretty stupid, in a right way though). Also, look at this OP:

NOTE: This OP is the crazy one where people wrote all over it. I thought it was pretty funny:

And wait, there’s more:

Fucking weird OPs kick ass. What about the ED? Something about it was just freakin awesome as all freakin freaks:

So yea, the music sequences were pretty good. What about the characters?

They were good.

………..

Okay well that wraps that up. Let’s grade:

FINAL GRADE = 5*

Random Comment: Welcome to the N.H.K. is still really fucking good.

  1. Welcome to the NHK is fucking great.

The OP with the comments was hilarious.

And as for the series, it was one of the better “SHAFT-ed” series. It was fun, the abstraction was never an obstruction and it never took itself too seriously. All those fucking pans dropping everywhere.

Still, the turtle-girl laying eggs always made me a bit… uneasy.

  2. I must disagree. I watched Moon Phase some years ago and didn’t like it. I hated Hazuki’s selfishness. Yes, she is a typical tsundere character but I hated her even more than Louise from ZnT. At least Saito deserved to be punished for being lecherous, but Tsukuyomi’s male lead (forgot the name) was kind and didn’t deserve the verbal abuse.
I thought that the pan jokes became stale after the second repetition. I also disliked the twist that Hazuki was a “daywalker”, it felt like a cheap deus-ex-machina to beat the first vampire baddy. While the OP imagery was funny, the song itself “Nekomimi Mode” was atrocious.
I credit the success of this show mainly to the collection of moe archetypes that is Hazuki: loli, tsundere, nekomimi (why?), vampire. But the story was generic love comedy crap.

  3. @ korosora: Haha….the turtle girl! Very weird!

@ Son Gohan: There are quite a few who disagree with this series, which is kind of understandable. Let me assess your reactions:

Hazuki was fucking weird. This is true. She was selfish to the end. Also, she cried every fucking second. She wasn’t my favorite character (who was? I don’t know….Seji?). That being said, I feel like she needed to be that character, although I would have liked to see more change in her at the end, one of the reasons why this didn’t get a 5^^. Also, I liked Louise, but that’s probably because I’m a huge Kugimiya Rie fan. Very bias in fact.

The whole day walking thing didn’t bother me that much, but at the same time, I didn’t really like it.

The OP song was retarded. However, after a couple episodes I found myself kind of liking it.

If there was anything I found to be really bad about this anime, it was the amount of crying.. Hazuki needed to be slapped in a few scenes, but sadly was not. Other then that, I loved the pans dropping. Like….loved them. I thought I would get sick of them, but they just got funnier…I guess I’m just like that.

Congrats, this is the longest response I’ve ever written.
