Best Characters of Every Show I’ve Seen – Part XVI: “S”

Back for more baby let’s do this. By the way, today I finally reached comment 2000. That’s pretty crappy considering this site is almost a year old. On to the good stuff.

Samurai 7 -Shimada Kambei

*This show was dropped at 23

In the actual live action/originally film done by Akira Kurosawa (which was absolutely brilliant), my favorite character was quite easily Kikuchiyo, but they turned him into a fucking stupid Robot in this one, which not only made me angry, but mad, flustered, perturbed, and angry as well (not to mention angry). Of course, the characters weren’t all that bad in this anime, but the immensely slow pacing and lack of any type of action/points of intrigue were a problem, and the main reason why I dropped the show (the whole robot adaptation thing also pissed me off a bit, and seemed kind of corny and stupid to me).

I’ll go ahead and say that Kambei is my favorite character, just because he looks like the man, and acts like the man, and thus, is the man. He’s also a nasty fighter.

Samurai Champloo – Mugen

Well let’s see, considering that Mugen is my header, I’d say that most people could tell beforehand who I was going to choose here. Mugen is the man. Mugen kicks ass. Mugen is voiced by Kazuya Nakai.

The End.

Wait: Mugen is fucking awesome, and one of the best characters ever, which can also be said for the series.

The End for real.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (all seasons) -Matoi Tsunetsuki

Before I even begin this, I will say that the cast of SZS is the best that I have seen ever, besides Hayate and maybe FMA. I honestly could put almost any character in a top spot for almost any other show. but among the many awesome characters, My favorite would have to be Matoi Tsunetsuki, because, quite obviously, she’s a stalker, and stalkers rule (in anime). She stalks whoever she falls in love with, and she has fallen in love with Nozomu, and thusly always shows up at points where you least expect, because she’s literally always stalking Nozomu. It’s great. I give her the ASA (Anime Stalker Award) for her great performance at being a stalker.

Other Notables:

  • Chiri Kitsu – Crazy Bitch.
  • Abiru Kobushi – Bandage Girl who steals tails from animals.
  • Kiri Komori – Hikikomori girl, except instead of staying at home, she stays at school, wrapped in a blanket.

Never mind Notables. I would have to name every single character. God I love this show.

School Days – Kotonoha Katsura

Meet Kotonoha, a quiet girl for the most part. She is generally shy around people, and it takes a LOT for her to actually confess to the main character, Makoto. Eventually the two date, and couldn’t be happier. Then a few small things happen, and when it’s all said and done, she is carrying around Makoto’s head in a dufflebag, and even killed her rival for Makoto’s affections. What a dynamic character.

Sengoku Basara – Nobunaga Oda

I really, REALLY, shouldn’t have to explain this one, but I will anyway:

  1. Voiced by Norio Wakamoto.
  2. Drinks for a fucking SKULL.
  3. Kills EVERYTHING.
  4. Doesn’t give a SHIT (about killing whoever, whenever).
  5. Just fucking awesome.

I’m done!

Serial Experiments: Lain – Lain

In this, completely awesome show, which is one of the coolest shows I’ve seen, Lain is probably one of the most dynamic characters that I’ve seen. At the start of the series, Lain is nothing more than a shy 14-year-old girl, living a seemingly normal life, until she’s introduced to The Wired (kind of like the internet). From here, she…….well….I don’t want to ruin it in case no one’s seen this show (go watch it now), but Lain changes in several ways. personally, I loved this anime’s complexity and how it dealt with the definition of reality, along with the definition of one’s self (did I even get that right?).

I kinda want to re watch this now.

Shakugan no Shana – Shana

Well, not a big surprise here. Shana, besides being one of Rie Kugimiya’s most well-known characters, is actually one of the best tsundere characters…..ever. I’m sure by now most people know that I really really really really like Shakugan no Shana, and all of its characters are great, but Shana? Pffffffff. Fagetaboutttt it. First there’s the character design. Although it’s pretty much the norm for most Rie Kugimiya characters (short, no breasts), Shana is a Flame Haze, and is generally awesome when she decides to get serious. Here hair pretty much turns to fire, and she looks fucking awesome. Then of course there’s her.

As a character, Shana has a lot on her plate. Not only does she slice up the bad guys with an awesome SAMURAI SWORD, but she also deals with adapting to human interaction (or I guess Torch interaction at first). In the beginning, she seemed pretty apathetic when a person died or became a torch, but through interacting with Yuji, she begins to change, and develops feelings of love and friendship (honestly that’s not even a reason why I like her, I just like her because she looks cool, kicks ass, and is played by Rie Kugimiya).

The second season was pretty shitty, and Shana kind of got annoying (as did all of the characters) until they started fighting, where Shana suddenly became fucking awesome again, and whooped ass.

Shaman King – Anna Kyoyama

She is Yoh’s fiancée by arranged marriage, and is pretty much awesome, because she is such a bitch, but at the same time, you can tell that she has genuine feelings for Yoh. She is always the person who has to whip Yoh into shape and force him to get his ass in gear, and she also demands. See the picture above? That’s her general demeanor. She rarely smiles. Oh, and yes, she has powers.

I didn’t have much to say about her, but despite that, she’s actually one of my favorite characters (I’m not going to try and rank her, but out of all the characters on this list, she’d be in the better half of them.

Shikabane Hime – Hokuto

First and foremost, as you can tell, she’s a crazy bitch. Considering that she’s a Shikabane with no regrets, or feelings whatsoever, she treats everything like a kid seeing something for the first time. Except she’s a kid who likes to just kill everything. If you say, “Kill that person,” then she’ll start laughing, and kill that person, and not just kill them, but shred them to pieces. It’s a nice trait to have.

Point number two, look at her eyes. They’re inverted, which is like heterochromia to another level. AWESOME. Not to mention the white hair and the crazy red mark on the left of her face (her left). She’s just one more reason to like Shikabane Hime (which was good).

Simoun – Aer

Aer is the best. Neviril is the worst. That is how it goes with me. In case you didn’t read the picture title, Aer is the one on the left (your left). What makes this whore so special?

Well first of all, she’s a whore. Okay that’s not true, but as far as characters go, she was one character that was upbeat and fun, and helped make this anime become really good. She really went at Neviril (in a lesbian way, although not technically), and that’s something I can respect. not much more to say here, but I do want to touch on he show a little bit.

Simoun was a great show (even though I got a bit confused by the ending). But to say that it’s yuri? Meh. Not really. You see, in their world, all people are born as females, and then later choose to be males, or remain as females. So technically, nothing is really yuri from the stand point of the characters. Any relationships (or most anyway) that form between these girls usually would not be yuri, because one of the girls would more than likely eventually decide to become a man (gotta make babies). Of course, this show still managed to produce a set of lesbian incest girls, but that’ Japan for you.

I understand that that explanation sucked. But I sort of, kind of got out what I was trying to say.

Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo – Honoko Kawai

I’m beginning to think that all shows starting with the letter “S” are instantly awesome. I like almost every single show on this list so far, albeit the first one. Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo is no different. Great show, great cast, great greatness. I almost picked Jun Fukuyama’s character, which was almost like a robot version of Lelouch, albeit funnier (I need to stop saying “albeit”), but in the end, Honoka’s greatness could not be overcome. Reasons:

  • She’s got a fucking cool hat.
  • Telekinetic powers and glowing red eyes.
  • She’s a typical quite girl character.
  • She’s just, really, awesome.

Spice and Wolf – Horo

Anyone who’s seen Spice and Wolf knows that Horo makes the show. Her personality is so awesome, that without her, the show would suck. Fortunately, the show includes her, so it is actually really really good. Basically, Horo is a couple things.

Firstly, she loves to tease Lawrence. Sometimes she acts turned on by him, just to get a reaction out of him. Sometimes she asks odd questions, to make him embarrassed. However, despite her teasing, it’s pretty obvious that she has genuine feelings for Lawrence, and here she develops sort of a tsundere attitude (sort of). She’s not full tsundere, but she definitely displays characteristics of one.

Why else is she awesome? Well for one, she loves eating and getting shit faced on  regular basis. Does that really make her cool though? Yes. Yes it does.

Strike Witches – Mio Sakamoto

Strike Witches, despite being a bunch of lolis without pants, was actually a pretty good show, and I was able to tolerate the blatant fanservice because I kind of enjoyed the plot (zippin around in those boot things looked kinda fun). Anyway, Mio Sakamoto. Look at the picture (stare HARD) and you should find out one reason why I like her.

That’s right, a magical eye that is covered by an eye patch. What can I say, I dig the eye patch. They make any character look cool. Even Watanuki looks cooler when he has an eye patch (in fact, I’d say the episodes got better when he had an eye patch too….God I miss xxxHOLiC).

Besides this, she wields a samurai sword and has an attitude of a winner. She’s a born leader and has the ability to not take shit, or act like moe garbage, or realize that she’s in a fanservice anime, like most of the other girls in this show.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu – Yuki Nagato

Well, here is a character who for some reason I keep reverting back to when I see other characters like her. She’s a typical quiet character, but she certainly isn’t the first. However, she is probably one of the most popular.

First of all, I would like to say that anyone who thinks that Mikuru is the best character can either suck my dick, jump off a cliff, or punch themselves in the privates until they become numb. Mikuru sucks. She’s just fucking annoying in so many ways. She cries and gets embarrassed all the time. She’s honestly just a pain. Where was she on my top 5 most hated characters post, is what I want to know.

Anyway, back to Yuki. She’s an alien, which is awesome. She’s all business, and rarely talks, which is awesome, and she’s generally awesome, which is awesome. I mean, she had to go through the endless eight around 15 thousand times. We only had to endure it for 9 or so episodes. I might have to consider her a bad ass now (she does do some bad ass stuff).

Well with that I have finished “S”. I’m probably going to do two more of these posts (maybe three). Almost at the end baby!

Maria + Holic = I Just Don’t Get It

I really don’t get it. Oh I get the premise of the show, but I don’t get why I liked it. I shall explain my theories.

Maria + Holic

In all honesty, it could have been a lot better. I thought they did an ok job with it though.

Premise: Lesbian girl (Kanako) goes to a [Catholic?] school for girls and on the first day (before the first day technically) she meets, Mariya, who she discovers is actually a cross dressing boy when he touches her (she breaks out in hives when a boy touches her). Hilarious first episode, I thought it had potential to knock down walls at this point.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series through the first 6 episodes…..then it started getting repetitive. Same jokes, same shit happening every, single, episode. Normally, this calls for a drop, HOWEVER, there are several reasons that kept this episode alive:

  1. The best combo of OP and ED ever. The OP is probably my favorite of the year, as well as the ED. This kept me watching, and ensured that I would watch from OP to ED.
  2. Shaft [productions studio] rules. If they hadn’t made this show, I probably wouldn’t have even watched it liked it as much. Personally, I’m a sucker for Shaft. I can’t help but like everything they make. Besides the awesome OPs and EDs that they ALWAYS make (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei? Forget about it. Awesome in every single way. I wish I had more room on my top ten), the animation is always usually awesome.
  3. The Priest in the last few episodes. He’s a funny ass guy.

Basically, this show was just poorly written. Every single episode was pretty much the same:

  1. Kanako bleeds
  2. Mariya has one line telling Kanako that she’s a pervert
  3. Her maid agrees
  4. More nosebleeds
  5. Kanako reiterates over and over girls are beautiful, and she wants them
  6. Kanako nosebleeds
  7. The end

Whoops I guess that I just spoiled every single episode for the whole season. Honestly, I looked forward to this show  every week, even though I knew what I was gonna get.  I never felt as though it was bad though. I would gladly approve of a second season, as this type of repetitiveness isn’t as bad compared to say, Ranma 1/2 (which I will never finish. I average one episode per month at my rate) or Naruto Fillers, or D. Gray Man (More like D. GAY Man LOL!!! (assume that the LOL is sarcastically pronounced)). I was going to give this a five at the beginning of this post (due to the OP and ED and Shaft really), but that would be retarded, because then I’d have to base every show off of the OP and ED, and it would then just be a review of the OP and ED. Therefore, even though I liked the material more than most shows that I give this rating too, Maria + Holic gets a

FINAL GRADE = 4

Revy shot Kanako in the face and really gave her a nosebleed.

(Remember, Bill died)

Top Ten Anime OP

Well, I finally got around to it. This has been a long time coming, I hope youtube doesn’t take down any of the videos that I put up. As I am writing this, I am listening to the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni OP, which is on the list, but where (mystery….suspense).

First I’d like to point out that an OP is more than just the song, it’s the visual effects, animation, premise….blah…..blah……….blahhhhhh.

10. Maria + Holic – Hanaji by  Yu Kobayashi

Although this is a new show, I loved the OP as soon as it came out (and the show too). There’s a lot of OP by the same production studio, Shaft, that are awesome. They always have a good way of mixing music and artistic, smart, cool animation. Frankly, I like the ED better. (I don’t have enough endings to make a top ten….only 2…..this is number 2 on that list)

EDIT: They took the previous video down, skip 14 seconds in that’s where the OP starts. Why take down an OP for copyright reasons? It’s not like it reveals anything. Gay.

9. Bleach – Rolling Star by Yui

Coincidentally, this song reminded me of a song I can use for my top ten endings list (take a wild wild guess). As for Rolling Star by Yui, the song is very good. I like to hear it. However, the animation sequence is nothing special, so it’s stuck at the bottom of this countdown.

8. Ergo Proxy -Kiri by MONORAL

I loved this show. I thought it kicked ass. I mean, look at the OP. I love the grittiness and choppiness it has. It matches the song perfectly, and does a good job of reflecting the anime, which is kind of dark. One of the best OP Eye have seen.

7. To LOVE-Ru – Forever We Can Make It -Thyme

Why did I like this OP so much? Well first of all the song is awesome. I really liked the song. Secondly, I thought it was a cool idea to have the credits written on an article of clothing, or a tag hanging from a bag, and it zooms in to show that. Most shows have the credits scrolling, which is boring. Also, the drawing is sketchy kind of, yet detailed, and that’s cool. (that was the shittiest explanation of the art work you could have). I also watched the video to the actual song…the girl who sings this is hot….she doesn’t really look asian though.

6. Lucky Star – Motteke! Sailor Fuku! by 4 Main Voice Actors of Show

Yes. BOOYAH! This OP is awesome! You can make fun of me all you want for liking this song, but the song, coupled with the cool scenes throughout this opening slots this in at number 6. I wanted to put it higher, but there’s so many good openings. I think Lucky Star was one of the few shows where I actually watched the OP every time without fail.

5. Pani Poni Dash! – Yellow Vacation, Roulette Roulette,  by The Voice Actors of the Show

Yellow Vacation

Roulette Roulette

Yes I know these are two different openings, but If I treated two openings  to two slots in this top ten,  I’d have two shows taking up a majority of slots. Therefore, since I liked both of these openings close to the same, I let them share a spot. Of the two, Roulette Roulette is my favorite one. This show is another one by Shaft, and as usual their OPs are artistic and different, and the songs are awesome too. I wanna re-watch this show. It reminds me of summer (both because of the music and the fact that I watched this during summer a while ago).

4. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei – All Twisted Up Inside, Daytime Rumba by Kenji Ohtsuki and Voice Actors From the Show

All Twisted Up Inside

Daytime Rumba

Shaft is back at work making more awesome openings. As usual, these are artistic different. All I can say is that the songs are awesome, the animation is awesome, and the show is awesome (barely missed my top ten).

3. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni – Higurashi no Naku Koro ni by Eiko Shimamiya

Not only does this opening match the anime with precision, but it’s really just a fuckin awesome song. I actually played this in my spare time more than any other anime OP (except Lucky Star). The animation is awesome, flowers, then blood. Awesome.

2. Cowboy Bebop – Tank! by The Seatbelts

Finally, an OP that isn’t J-Pop, or J-Rock or something like that. It’s jazzzzzzz. And the animation shows that. The lines, the colors, the shadows. I actually watched this OP every time I watched Bebop. In a way, the opening reminded me of Spike, because both were……well….I guess you could call them smooth.

NUMBER 1

Samurai Champloo – Battlcry by The Kid

I watched this show around the same time a Pani Poni Dash! So it reminds me of summer. This anime didn’t only have a sick intro, but its soundtrack was riddled with hip hop. Let’s take a second and see why this anime will never be taken down from my top ten (most likely). Three things I love most in this world are hip hop, anime, and feudal Japan. This anime has all those things. It’s like they studied me, and made an anime for me. Fuck, there’s even an episode about baseball (one of the funniest/best anime episodes ever made). They make fun of Commodore Perry so bad it’s awesome. I don’t need to explain this OP though, it speaks for itself.

What do you think? Anything I miss? Anything you think is better? Anyone read this? Be merry, you just read something that Eye wrote.

EDIT: I guess I thow in some honorable mentions:

(The ones in BOLD were ones that should/could have been in the top ten)

  • Naruto – Fighting Dreamers OP
  • Inuyasha – Grip! OP
  • xxxHOLiC – Whatever the name of the song is OP
  • Elfen Lied – Liliad? OP (I don’t remember the name of the song, and since this is just honorable mentions thrown in I don’t feel like looking the names up. I thought this was a pretty good OP, and one cannot say it was not well made. Probably perfect for the show, and really cool animation. Is it bold though? hmmm).
  • Mahou Sensei Negima! – Happy Material (Electric and Regular Versions) OP
  • Love Hina/Love Hina Again – OPs
  • Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (I keep bringing this show up…time to do a review on it I guess)
  • Excel Saga – OP
  • Ah! My Goddess – OP Bagpipes suck
  • Negima!? – OP (another Bang-shaft….get what I’m trying to say?)
  • Kemeko Deluxe! – OP
  • Shaman King – OP
  • Gintama – 1st OP (just picked this show up finished downloading the first 90 episodes torrent style. Liked the OP)

There that’s all the OP’s I like really. I think there was one from Ranma 1/2 that I liked, but I can’t remember which one (there’s a bunch) so whatever.

xxxHOLiC = Series Review

That’s two  anime series that I finished today, although I had one of them already half watched. Either way, that makes me happy, so now the writer who brought you Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei = Series Review, and Hayate no Gotoku! = Series Review, brings you

xxxHOLiC

Is xxxHOLiC good? No. Is it bad? No. Is it really good? No. Does it suck total balls? No. xxxHOLiC falls under none of these categories. The best word to describe xxxHOLiC came to me from a dream, where I was sitting on a mountain top. All of a sudden, a dove….fluttered by, and then I woke up…..and my room was freezing. What I’m trying to say, is cool. It’s really really cool. However, there are different kinds of “cool”.

Here’s the type of cool xxxHOLiC isn’t:

Morpheus: “Neo, Look at this cool rock I found isn’t it neat-o!”

Neo: (more interested in the girl in the red dress) “Yea……cool.”

Here’s a type of cool that best describes said show:

Morpheus: “Free your mind” (jumps from building to building)

Neo: “Cool.”

What a fuckin great analogy. I rule. What was I talking about? Ah, xxxHOLiC…..I guess I should tell you what it’s about. (deep breath) Basically this kid named Watanaki always gets pestered and chased by demons that want to fuck with him and so he’s agitated about it plus he’s the only one that can see them so it’s kind of tough until he meets Yuuko who owns a shop where she grants wishes for a price and she makes it so that the demons stop bothering Watanaki of course he can still see them but he just doesn’t get bothered by them as much however in return he has to work for her which pretty much means cooking and cleaning and gay shit but they always have to deal with cool things and situations and shit and it’s a really cool show…….and THAT my friends is the definition of a run-on sentence thank you very much. Whew! Look at these scenes and tell me what they remind you of:

The Well

Big White Hands that come up out of the ground and grab you.

The Answer is on the bottom of the page. By the way these pics are from the last ep…but don’t worry it doesn’t spoil anything (I don’t think you can make spoilers for this show really).

Pros:

  • Plot = It always introduced me to something cool, new, and different on so many levels. Niceeee.
  • Characters = Between the Pipe fox, those two twin girls, Yuuko’s obsession with sake, and that talking beanie baby (Mokona), the characters were cool.
  • The animation was different. Very long. (necks, arms, legs). I liked the change.

Cons:

  • Watanaki is such an asshole. He’s like a Tsundere in guy form. Jeez dude, learn how do adapt to people. Stop whining.

It was really cool so I give xxxHOLiC a

FINAL GRADE = 5*

Now I need to watch the second season, and  apparently Tsubasa: Reservior Chronicles? Whatever here’s the answer to the picture:

Remember this guy? Dead Hand.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei = Series Review

One of the best shows out there. Not only does it have my favorite animation, but it also includes one of the best character lineups, plots, good humor, and the best OP and Ending songs like……..ever. (Yes I have a top ten OP/ED and I will put them up eventually, I grouped every single one from this show as one, and they are high on the list). So then, here is my review of

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

What’s it about? A depressed person, Nomozu Itoshiki, is trying to hang himself when along comes this overly optomistic girl, Kafuka, who eventually stops him from doing so, and decides to call him “Pink Supervisor”, because the trees around him were pink, and pays him 50 yen for the rights to call him such. She goes to school, and soon there after it is revealed that Itoshiki is the homeroom teacher of her class, which turns out to have only one normal girl in it. Hilarity ensues, as the show pretty much points out the obvious things around us that we don’t notice, and makes fun of them using satire, which I love. Oh, and Itoshiki always falls into despair over any subject brought up.

Pros:

  • Animation = Probably the best I’ve seen. Definatly the most artistic. I love it. Shaft did a great job with this one.
  • Characters = Every character has something unique about them. Even the “normal girl” is unique…..because she’s….well…..normal. My favorite character is probably Matoi, who stalks Itoshiki because she’s in love with him.
  • Humor = Was excellent. This show points out things that you don’t really notice around everyday life, and makes them funny.
  • It’s awesome.

Cons:

  • Sometimes they put up a million words and give you no time to read them. These are usually examples to illustrate someones point. I really had to stretch for that one.
  • The show turned very lovey-dovey halfway through, and the comedy slowly was lessened until it could barely be considered a comedy, except this never actually happened and I made this whole sentence up.

Watch this show. If you don’t watch it, you have no soul…..and what’s worse, you suck. Therfore, since this show (both seasons and the OVAs) was fucking great, Eye hereby give it a

FINAL GRADE = 5^^
